The sinking of the shaft of Aberbeeg Colliery began in 1860 and was completed in 1862, when the pay rate of a collier was 4s6d per day (22.5p) It closed in 1926. Records show the following numbers employed; 1896 – 260, 1908 – 334, 1918 – 213 and 1923 – 192. In 1868 12 year old “Door Boy” Thomas Gibbs died of injuries sustained in an accident at the colliery and on 23rd April 1902 escaped an explosion via the Arael Level.
