  • this photograph would have been taken around mid 1930s and cannot possibly be of Elon & Jane Payne (Elon died in 1904) – evidence comes from the clothing length of hemlines (c late 20s/1930s) and from Hansard – the price of bacon at 1/-

It could be that family members kept the shop after Jane died in 1917.

  • Elon Payne died in 1904 and Jane (nee Wright) in 1917 – the clothing of the people dates the photo to later than the turn of the century?

  • Without more accurate information, we dated the photograph as Circa 1900.

  • I’ve been searching into the history of my nans family, surname Payne. It appears that the photo of Peglers shop would be of Elon and Jane Payne with their children Gertrude, William (my great grandfather) and Howard Payne.
