Llanhilleth Colliery 8

Comments about this page

  • So many things I could say about the pit, I only worked there for a few years from 1966 until closure in 1969
I worked as a Colliery electrician, the characters were many I will tell you about a couple of them
George Hibble who was a fitter in B7 caused 😳 mayhem on one shift by writing the face off due to Metal fatigue
Big Fred Watts who was a electrician B7 who leaning against a bank of electric panels caused them to topple over
So many more would take me hours
One thing Llanhilleth Colliery was really proud of was the first aid team who was the best in the South Wales
David Caldwell, the Musto brothers Peter and Mike
Not sure about the other members I think one was Jock
The best bunch of people it was privilege to have known not many of us left

  • I have approved your comment for display, Martin. The Jock you mentioned was Jock Coventry. I believe he worked in the Baths medical centre. My Dad, Gus Maloney also worked in the colliery.
