William Henry Simmonds: A life dedicated to his community
At Llanhilleth Miner’s Institute, on the night of 22nd April 1944, whilst listening to the overture before a performance of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Co. which he had arranged, its Secretary, and founder member. Mr. William Henry Simmonds, suffered a massive heart attack and died. He was 61 years old.
Described as “one of nature’s gentlemen”, Mr. Simmonds had dedicated his life to the Institute and Llanhilleth and In May 1945 a plaque was unveiled at the Institute in his memory.
We are grateful to his granddaughter, Patricia Jenkins, for providing the photograph and transcripts of newspaper articles following his death and attach them in full, to give a true reflection of his contribution to the community and the high esteem in which he was held.
