Llanhilleth: Hafod-y-Coed, "The Rows"
Two views of Hafod-y-Coed, Llanhilleth, known locally as “The Rows”.
One appears to have been taken from the colliery site, below the part of the road through the village known as the “Horseshoe Bend”.
The other, taken before the Colliery Pithead Baths were built, shows. on the left, Hillside Terrace, Oxford Place and Regents Place.
The houses were demolished some time ago and most of the residents moved to the new Hafodarthen estate in Brynithel.

Writing on behalf of my nan.
Her name when she lived as a young girl was Linda Randell, her parents were Harry and Evelyn May Randell. Part of a large family they had several children. Nan thinks her dad Harry worked at the pit. She remembers living in 29 Hafod Y Coed, the ‘bottom row’.
Nan moved away at approx 17yrs of age, this would have been about 1960. She remembers attending school she believe it was called llanhilleth school and the other school was Brynithel.
She remembers neighbour Mrs Cook, MRs Amistice Daly (daughter called Pamela son Alan)
I remember the Randall family that lived on Hafod y Coed (The Rows). Derek Randall attended Llanhilleth “Old School” at the same time. The second school you mentioned was Brynhyfryd Secondary Modern, not Brynithel. An easy mistake to make. We hope that your Nan has fond memories of Llanhilleth.
My grandparents lived in Middle Rows, his name was Jack Morgan and his wife was Rose
My mother Beat was one of the children
We grandchildren used to visit every Sunday, can remember no hot water outside toilet
Those were hard times,
Thank you for your comments, Martin, I’ve added them to the post.
